ABOUT US

Community Literacy Centers, Inc. (CLC) was established in 1987 as a non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to teaching adults to read. The founding members of CLC recognized the correlation between illiteracy and many of the social problems in our community; crime, poverty, health issues, and ignorance. Since its inception, CLC has helped more than 38,000 individuals. CLC also provides professional development for our teachers and tutor training for volunteers.

CLC is a place where adults learn to read in a safe, welcoming environment. For many adults, CLC provides a second chance at life and opens new doors of opportunity.

OUR MISSIOn: to encourage and support adult literacy in our community
OUR VISION

Our vision is to change lives by increasing awareness of the benefits of a more literate community and providing a welcoming environment where every adult who wants to read has an opportunity to learn.

WHAT WE DO
  • We provide free classroom instruction to approximately 1,000 adults each year in reading and writing. Individual tutoring is also available for students who need additional support.

  • CLC offers Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes in several locations throughout Oklahoma County by partnering with more than 28 agencies to reach those who need assistance. We also offer an High School Equivalency (HSE) class to prepare students for taking the HiSET test.

  • CLC provides a very relaxed and safe setting for learning. We keep our class sizes small so that instructors can teach to varied learning styles. All of our classes are free of charge.

ESL classes help students learn to read, write, and speak in English.  These students speak another language in their household, but would like to learn English so they can improve their communication at work and in the community.

Our Basic Skills classes help students improve their level of reading, writing, and spelling. In order to be placed into one of classes, please make an appointment with us by calling (405) 524-7323.

LEAP focuses on literacy issues by providing on-site training to individuals through cooperative partnerships with non-profit agencies, churches, schools, and some businesses in the Oklahoma City area. The LEAP program is site-specific.

The program is designed to meet the needs of partner agencies and their clients.  Our partners provide classroom space, access to some office equipment, and a liaison. LEAP is the critical link that enables the individual to learn in a familiar environment as they work towards the initial goals set with their home agency.

The LEAP program provides on-site training to individuals. All LEAP activities are taught by professional educators and supervised by CLC’s Education Program Coordinator. CLC also provides teaching materials, volunteer tutors, and coordination. Instructors are trained in phonics-based activities, which are scientifically proven to work with struggling learners.
